“Maintain your sense of self, so if the relationship dissolves, you don’t lose yourself.” -P.

This heartfelt gem extends beyond just romantic relationships; it touches friendships, work relationships, family dynamics, and all forms of peer interactions. At our core, as humans, we have a deep-seated psychological need to belong. Sometimes, this compels us to adapt our behaviors, preferences, and perspectives to align with those around us in a quest for validation.

However, as we navigate these relationships, it’s crucial to hold onto our sense of self. Engaging in activities, social groups, and pursuits that reflect our own values and choices is an essential part of maintaining our identity.

It’s all too common to find ourselves comparing aspects of our lives to those of others. When we become desensitized to our own worth, it’s easy to overshadow our unique qualities in favor of recognizing the strengths of people we admire or aspire to connect with. Appreciating the talents and potential of others is wonderful, but it’s vital not to overlook our own value in the process. When we diminish our self-worth, we risk becoming mere reflections of those around us, losing touch with who we truly are.

Take a moment to reflect: what are the qualities you appreciate about yourself? Are there characteristics you wish you had? Consider your hobbies—jot down what you enjoy doing, but also think about the pastimes you wish to explore.

I recently spoke with an ambitious entrepreneur in my personal life who shared how he often gauges his success by comparing it to the accomplishments of others. When I prompted him to articulate his own goals, free from the influence of those around him, he struggled to define them. This kind of comparison can be a recipe for a midlife crisis, as societal expectations and peer comparisons often dictate where we “should” be, overshadowing where we truly desire to go.

Let’s dive into the concept of seeds. These seeds represent thoughts and ideas sprouting from our social interactions and the environment around us—everything from advertisements to music that fills our lives. When we nurture these seeds by granting them power, time, and validation, we inadvertently allow them to flourish as foundations of our identity. These seeds can form rules, branches, or pillars of who we are. Some seeds will fulfill your personal growth while others may sprout a negative view of self.

As you embark on your journey, let’s cultivate the seeds of your own thoughts and aspirations. Honor your individuality and allow your true self to thrive!
